Stopping this war means our ability to regain our humanity

Sadig Samal*

I have never ceased to look into the mirror of war and see nothing but destruction, misery, and bloodshed...

I contemplated it enough, hoping to find the goodness that war philosophers and makers speak of, but all I found was fire...

I was defeated early on by blood. I no longer see anything but fragments and skulls, enough to plead with anyone and everyone who has the power to stop this senseless loss of life in a time where there is no voice louder than the clatter of weapons...

I always knew there was a coming war. How I wished it would be a war against our deformities and our cruelty towards each other, to be our noblest war that allows us all to engage in it. But it seems that some see no value in our lives, lives that the state did not bother to uplift to the ranks of humanity, to the point where they demand our flesh and blood as a sacrifice for the survival of a state that has never looked at us throughout its deceitful and oppressive history.

Stopping this war means our ability to regain our humanity, and the first step towards that is surrendering to all this bloodshed.

Our memories deserve to be defeated in the face of blood.

Honoring our deaths deserves it.

The warmth of our homes deserves it.
