United Nations Monitors Human Rights Situation in Sudan

Moatinoon - In its continued efforts, the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) stated that the Civilian Protection Support Office is monitoring the human rights and protection situation in the country.

The mission expressed deep concern about the ongoing situation in Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri, where clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have persisted.

The mission highlighted the impact on civilians due to the deteriorating situation in West Darfur, Garsila (Central Darfur), and Kutum (North Darfur), including women and children who are caught between the warring parties.

Human rights officials are currently documenting dozens of incidents, including killings, arrests, cases of enforced disappearances, attacks on hospitals, sexual violence, and other grave violations against children committed by the parties to the conflict.

Human rights officials are also engaging with the parties to the conflict to urge action against perpetrators and to protect civilians and their properties.

On Friday, the United Nations Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) for six months, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres supported the continuation of the Special Representative for Sudan, Volker Perthes, in his role.

This decision by the Security Council comes after days of the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, calling on UN Secretary-General António Guterres to replace his Special Envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes.
