Escaping from the fires of Khartoum to the barrenness of the crossings

By Samer Hassan*

The survivors (of war) will write about the tragedies of the crossing and the wounds inflicted on our Sudanese pride there. They will write about the suffering of our children and women, and about the corruption of the kleptocratic regime that contributed to oppressing our people wherever they sought refuge.

They will write about seeking shelter in the temporary shade of tents from the scorching sun, and about sleeping at night inside the darkness of those tents for four nights, seeking protection from the scattered scorpions. They will write about crisis merchants who seek to profit from selling water and renting out makeshift beds in a place where there is no room to fulfill basic human needs.

They will write about the suffering of the sick there, with no place to receive even the most basic healthcare services, and how the staff of international organizations remained ominously silent in the face of this humanitarian tragedy.

They will write about the provocations of the Rapid Support Forces at the checkpoints, the oppression of women and elders, and the terror that children and minors experience.

Oh world, pay attention to what is happening in the Arqin crossing and its surroundings from both sides. Save those who are stranded.
