Trapped with Their Children - 1

Moatinoon - By Mohammed Osman
Behind the teachers rest area and inside the Sonasel Institute for English Language Education, mats are scattered on the verandas and closely arranged beds fill the three classrooms designated for housing and accommodating the displaced from Khartoum.

Seventy elderly men and young youth are brought together by a shared fate and a converging destiny. They are survivors of the war, on an unknown journey, after their landing in Egypt proved difficult.

I arrived at the place for the first time on Friday, June 2, 2023, after the Auto-rickshaw driver tired of circling around fully occupied hotels, with room prices ranging from 15,000 to 20,000 pounds per day (and you have to wait), apartments ranging from 20,000 to 35,000 pounds, and cheaply built zinc-sheeted compounds. The Ethiopian employee urged me, saying, Its zinc and without a fan for 3,000. It seemed as if he was tired of the surprised and inquisitive remarks posed by those asking about temporary shelter.

The auto-rickshaw driver turned towards me as we passed Tata Street and pointed to the shelter house, across from the Dankala Square Park, and said, What do you think, my friend? Look at these people. And so it was.
