The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), Volker Perthes, stated that the reports coming from Geneina are extremely alarming, and if verified, they could amount to crimes against humanity.

The UN envoy condemned all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, regardless of their form or alleged perpetrators.

In a statement issued by the UN mission today, Perthes highlighted the rapid deterioration of the security, human rights, and humanitarian situation throughout Sudan since the outbreak of the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15th.

Perthes acknowledged the UNs inability at this stage to verify all violations, noting, The information received from various civil society entities and human rights defenders paints a clear picture of the destructive impact on the civilian population.

The UN envoy expressed particular concern about the situation in Geneina following waves of violence since late April. He pointed out the emerging pattern of widespread attacks targeting civilians based on their ethnic identities, allegedly committed by Arab militias and some armed men dressed in the uniform of the Rapid Support Forces, as stated in the statement.
