A meeting of the Quartets IGAD Committee, chaired by Kenya, confirmed the launch of a comprehensive political process aimed at achieving peace in Sudan in mid-July or the first week of August, to be hosted by Kenya.

The IGAD Quartet Committee held its first ministerial meeting on the situation in Sudan yesterday, Monday. The virtual meeting, chaired by Alfred Mutua, Cabinet Secretary in the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was attended by the foreign ministers Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti, Demeke Mekonnen of Ethiopia, and Deng Dau Deng of South Sudan.

The committee discussed the current situation and developments in Sudan since the 14th session of the IGAD General Assembly held in Djibouti. The committee agreed to the precise implementation of the meetings decisions regarding the situation in Sudan.

They emphasized the adoption of a gradual approach to resolving the conflict in Sudan and working towards a direct meeting between the parties to the conflict.

The committee welcomed the Jeddah Process and the recent ceasefire agreement.

On Monday, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Sudan is not concerned with the outcomes of the meeting as it is still awaiting a response from the relevant international governmental body on development regarding Sudans objection to Kenyas chairmanship of the Quartet Committee.

However, the Kenyan Foreign Ministry stated that Kenyas leadership of the process could only be revoked through the IGAD Summit.
