German Radio Devotes Radio Program to Sudan

As the Sudan war entered its third month, the German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle followed in the footsteps of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Arabic and launched a dedicated radio program for Sudan called Sudan Now.

The German radio announced that the radio program would start broadcasting on Monday, June 26, 2023, and would be directed daily for half an hour to its followers in Sudan. It would be aired on shortwave and via the Hotbird satellite.

The BBC had previously launched a daily program titled For Sudan, Peace two weeks after the outbreak of fighting in Sudan, following the complete cessation of radio broadcasting services in January of last year.

The German radio stated that the reasons for launching the program were the scarcity of accurate and independent information and media blackout in the absence of internet connectivity due to ongoing battles and acts of violence.

Manuela Kasper-Claridge, Editor-in-Chief of DW, explained, There is a shortage of everything, including access to independent, free information amidst the armed confrontations between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

She added, A team of distinguished journalists will provide the Sudanese people with information they cannot obtain due to the media blackout and internet disruptions in some areas, as well as the suspension of some local radio stations due to military operations.
