Demands to Disarm Khartoum and Civilians Fleeing to Ethiopia

The African Peace and Security Council has expressed deep concern over the ongoing fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. In a statement issued today, the council called for an unconditional and immediate cessation of hostilities and the disarmament of Khartoum, as well as the establishment of humanitarian corridors to facilitate the delivery of aid to those in need.

The council condemned violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law and warned the perpetrators that they will be held accountable for their actions.

The council called for a broader political process that brings together all major stakeholders to address the challenges facing the country. It emphasized the central role of genuine and inclusive dialogue as the only viable approach to achieving a sustainable solution to the countrys challenges.

On another note, the United Nations Mission in Sudan expressed concern over the outbreak of violence between the Sudan Peoples Movement-North and the Sudanese Army in the Blue Nile state. In a statement issued today, the mission stated that dozens of civilians have fled across the Ethiopian border in search of safety.

The UNAMIS mission urged all parties involved to immediately halt the fighting in order to protect the local population.
