After 100 days of the Sudan war, 435 children killed and over 2,000 injured

The United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) announced on Monday that it has received reports of 2,500 flagrant violations of childrens rights, with at least one violation occurring every hour, after 100 days of the brutal conflict in Sudan. UNICEF warned of the increasing gender-based violence against women and girls.

In a statement, UNICEF said, The reported numbers are from UNICEF sources alone, and it is likely that the true figure is much higher. This is a grim reminder of the daily impact of the crisis on the most vulnerable groups in a country where around 14 million children need humanitarian support.

Ted Chaiban, UNICEFs Deputy Executive Director for Humanitarian Action and Supply Operations, stated, The scale of the impact this conflict has had on children in the past hundred days is almost unimaginable. Every day, children are being killed, injured, and abducted. Schools, hospitals, critical infrastructure, and life-saving supplies they depend on have been damaged, looted, and destroyed.

The statement further mentioned, According to reports, at least 435 children have been killed in the conflict, and at least 2,025 children have been injured. UNICEF also reported disturbing accounts of escalating attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan, with an estimated 68% of hospitals in the hardest-hit areas forced to suspend services. At least 17 hospitals have been attacked, and several others are believed to have been turned into military bases, with ambulance services being targeted.

UNICEF warned about ongoing movement restrictions due to the security situation and administrative barriers, and the prevention of access to humanitarian aid, which puts 690,000 children at risk of severe acute malnutrition, and exposes 1.7 million children under the age of one to the risk of missing critical vaccinations, increasing the spread of diseases.

Chaiban stated, The past hundred days have shown, as in any conflict, that the direct and indirect impacts on children and families are devastating. Without concerted action, including the commitment of parties to the conflict to cease hostilities and abide by international law, severe violations of childrens rights will worsen. He added, Without guaranteed, safe, and unimpeded access for humanitarian workers and life-saving supplies, alongside the urgently needed additional funding, the future of millions of children will hang in the balance.
