Washington: Sudan is a Priority for the Security Council in August

US Ambassador Linda Greenfield expressed her concern about the ongoing armed conflict and violations taking place in Sudan, describing it as a power struggle between two generals. Greenfield, who will assume the presidency of the International Security Council on behalf of the United States of America for the month of August, said in a press conference yesterday that the issue of Sudan will be on the councils priority agenda.

Regarding the role that the International Security Council can play in this matter, she stated that the council is responsible for dealing with peace and security worldwide. She added that what is happening in Sudan should be on the Security Councils agenda. She emphasized that the people of Sudan want to hear from the international community.

They want to hear from the Security Council that we havent forgotten them, that we care about the human rights violations being committed, that we care about the large numbers of women being subjected to rape, and that we care about the thousands of people who were forced to leave their homes and cross the borders into Chad and other neighboring countries.

She said that the Sudanese people must realize that the world has not turned its back on what is happening in their country, and this is what we can do at the Security Council, pointing out that the humanitarian situation in Sudan is extremely dire. She added, I believe providing assistance to the people in Chad who were forced to cross the borders is crucial. It is also important to get assistance to those who have been displaced within Sudan. These are the issues we definitely want to address.
