Rising Levels of Food Insecurity in Sudan

Moatinoon

United Nations agencies have warned of the increasing levels of food insecurity in Sudan, stating that millions are suffering from severe hunger due to ongoing conflicts.

UN agencies continue to distribute food supplies in several regions of Sudan, but they have confirmed that the needs are escalating, and they will continue to grow as the fighting persists.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that more than 40 trucks carrying 1,600 tons of food have arrived in three Sudanese states - Kassala, Al-Qadarif, and White Nile - between July 22nd and 27th.

The office also coordinated the movement of five additional trucks carrying 300 tons of relief materials to West Kordofan state.

Since May 22nd, over 780 trucks carrying 35,000 tons of humanitarian aid have reached locations across Sudan.

In the Darfur region, the World Food Programme provided food and nutrition assistance to more than 450,000 people in the states of Central, East, North, and South Darfur since the outbreak of hostilities there.

Currently, the World Food Programmes aid, in cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent, reaches internally displaced individuals due to the conflict in the Furdus area, East Darfur.

Observers report that much of the relief material arriving in the country is being seen for sale in markets instead of reaching those in need.
