International Organization for Migration: 4 Million People Fleeing Conflict in Sudan

Moatinoon
The International Organization for Migration stated on Wednesday that the conflict in Sudan has forced nearly 4 million people to flee their homes in over 100 days.

The latest data from the International Organization for Migrations displacement tracking matrix revealed that clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have led to a massive displacement of people, with over 926,000 seeking refuge outside the country, while 3.02 million people have been internally displaced.

According to the latest statistics from the United Nations migration agency regarding the humanitarian situation in Sudan, individuals were forced to leave all 18 states in Sudan. The highest percentage of displaced individuals is concentrated in the states of White Nile at 15%, Northern at 11%, North Darfur at 9%, and White Nile at 9%.

The field teams of the International Organization for Migration reported that 71% of the total displaced individuals fled from the Khartoum state.

The organization explained that the current estimates of displacement cases over the past 108 days exceed the total recorded cases over the past four years. However, they also pointed out that access to many areas remains impossible due to ongoing fighting, meaning the current assessments are based on reports or initial estimates.

Difficult Refugee Conditions
Refugees from Sudan have arrived in neighboring countries, including Egypt, Libya, Chad, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, and Ethiopia.

The organization stated that Sudanese citizens make up more than two-thirds of these refugees, while the remaining third consists of other nationalities and returning individuals.

On the occasion of 100 days since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, called on all parties to the conflict to end this tragic war immediately.

The UNHCR stated that the conditions were horrific for those who fled the country seeking shelter in neighboring countries, with overcrowded displacement camps and the impending rainy season making resettlement and aid delivery even more challenging.

The International Organization for Migration echoed these concerns, warning that the rains could lead to floods and exacerbate the already fragile situation.

On the Brink of Famine
Meanwhile, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned on Wednesday that hunger and displacement are worsening due to the escalating conflict.

The office reported that 6 million people in Sudan, equivalent to 13% of the total population, are one step away from famine, according to the latest analysis of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification.

More than 20 million people in the country are facing high levels of food insecurity due to conflict, economic downturn, and mass displacement.

Health Crisis
Since mid-April, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has resulted in displacement, killings, injuries, and a deepening humanitarian crisis.

Reports continue to emerge about looting and attacks on public institutions and the seizure of private homes in the capital Khartoum, while clashes persist in four of the five states of Darfur.

Last week, the World Health Organization recorded cases of infectious diseases and other illnesses among displaced individuals seeking shelter in hard-to-reach locations with limited healthcare services. The organization also mentioned that more than 50 health facilities have been attacked.

The World Health Organization warned that the health crisis is impacting the entire region, and humanitarian workers fear that the situation will deteriorate further for vulnerable civilians caught between the warring parties.
