Geneina: Corpses of the Dead Still Lying on Rooftops and in Valleys

Moatinoon

Activists in the city of Geneina have stated that the bodies of those killed in the clashes in Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, have not yet been buried.

A statement issued on Saturday by the Resistance Committees in Geneina stated that the bodies of the deceased are still lying on rooftops, with some of them being disposed of in mass graves or thrown into valleys.

The statement clarified that bodies that have not been buried or handled are still lying on rooftops and inside houses, while most of them have been discarded by throwing them into the Kaja Valley or buried in mass graves in West Mishterak or Renga (red soil).

The publication painted a bleak picture of the city that witnessed massive atrocities, described as ethnic cleansing against the Masalit ethnic group. The situation reached its peak with the killing of the West Darfur governor, Major General Khamees Abdullah Abkar, hours after he criticized the Rapid Support Forces in mid-June.

The committees explained in their press report, the first in a month and a half, that the city continues to suffer after 60 days of being violated by the Rapid Support Forces through killing and looting, including breaking and entering doors and windows, disruption of the communication network, complete internet blackout, shortage of medicines and medical services, increase in malaria and infections cases, rise in prices of consumer goods and supplies, and weak intervention of international and regional organizations.

They added that the camps for the displaced in the city were demolished and destroyed, where Kalani Camp (Al-Ghabat), Krindiq Camp, Al-Hajaj City Camp, and parts of Abu Dhar Camp were completely destroyed. All the southern and western neighborhoods were looted, including doors, windows, and zinc roofs.

They confirmed that the security situation remains unstable with a widespread presence of Janjaweed and strangers within Geneina, random gunfire, cautious and weak return of movement in the northern neighborhoods, and difficulty moving between parts of the city. Most of the remaining residents have moved to the city of Ardamata, where they fled after Geneina was destroyed.
