The number of displaced and refugees in Sudan has risen to over 4 million

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has raised the number of internally displaced persons and refugees in and out of Sudan to more than 4 million. In its latest statistical report, it stated that as of August 8th, the ongoing conflict in Sudan has forced over 4.25 million individuals to flee their homes.

The international organization clarified that the number of internally displaced persons within the country has reached 3,282,303, while the number of those who have fled to neighboring countries has reached 968,451 refugees.

The organization stated that the internally displaced persons represent 656,292 families, and the movement of citizens has affected all eighteen states of the country.

It further explained that the state of Nile ranked first, with 14.91% of newcomers, followed by Northern state with 10.99%, North Darfur with 8.44%, and White Nile with 8.43%. The field teams noted that the displaced individuals originally came from eight states.

The organization informed that the majority of the displaced are from Khartoum state, accounting for 71.24%, followed by North Darfur at 8.54%, then South Darfur at 7.52%, West Darfur at 7.24%, Central Darfur at 4.48%, North Kordofan at 0.50%, South Kordofan at 0.47%, and the River Nile state at 0.01%.

Regarding displacement to neighboring countries, the organization stated that the conflict in Sudan has led to mixed movements across borders, with 968,451 individuals moving to neighboring countries including Egypt, Libya, Chad, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. Among those tracked in these countries, 68% are Sudanese and 32% are foreigners and returnees. The majority of arrivals were reported in Chad (39%), Egypt (29.5%), and South Sudan (21.6%).

In terms of displacement to neighboring countries, the report indicated that Sudanese individuals are distributed in neighboring countries as follows: Egypt 285,300, Libya 3,397, Chad 377,404, Central African Republic 17,302, South Sudan 209,434, and Ethiopia 75,614.

As a result, Chad became the leading country receiving refugees from Sudan, followed by Egypt, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, respectively.

The report highlighted the numbers that reached Libya, marking the first time Libya has been mentioned as a destination for Sudanese displacement. The IOM noted that its teams tracked the arrival of 3,397 refugees from Sudan, with 2,897 arriving in Kufra and 500 in Umm Al-Araneb.

However, it pointed out that some of them are citizens of African and Arab countries.

It mentioned that the total number of Sudanese arrivals in Libya as of August 6th reached 2,505 Sudanese, with over half of them indirectly arriving from Chad. Of them, 966 arrived in Kufra and 500 in Umm Al-Araneb. Additionally, the number of those arriving directly from Sudan through Northern state and North Darfur reached 1,039 displaced individuals.

Furthermore, it added that the displacement tracking matrix recorded the arrival of 600 Libyan returnees and 292 from third countries (222 Chadian, 26 Ethiopian, 16 Somali, 9 Nigerian, 9 Eritrean, 6 Egyptian, 3 from Niger, and 1 from Burkina Faso).
