US state spokesman Matthew Miller said his country was disturbed by the recent increase in indiscriminate air and artillery strikes in the Sudan, including in the states of Khartoum, Southern Darfur and Southern Kordofan, which have resulted in large numbers of civilian casualties. We are particularly concerned by reports of an airstrike in southern Khartoum that killed at least 43 people, Miller said in a press statement yesterday, according to which the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) exchanged shelling on August 23. (RSF), which killed at least 27 people -- mostly women and children -- in Nyala and continued to bomb in a number of areas, including using barrel bombs.)

Inciting the parties to violence had caused death and destruction throughout the Sudan. He called for the parties compliance with their obligations under international humanitarian law, including those relating to the protection of civilians. He noted the failure of both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to commit themselves to the protection of civilians set out in the Jeddah Declaration, which they signed last May 11.

Miller called on the warring parties to end this brutal conflict, stressing that the Sudanese people deserve freedom, peace and justice.
