Sudan: Generals in a Long-Distance Race

moatinoon

Yesterday, Thursday, witnessed the marathon of speeches addressed to the United Nations General Assembly in its 78th session in New York. Inside the General Assembly building, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the leader of the Sudanese army, delivered a speech through words he has been repeating since 2019, adding new statements related to the mid-April war with the Rapid Support Forces, his ally in the coup against the transitional civilian government in October 2021.

While General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces, delivered a prerecorded video speech to the United Nations General Assembly, preceding al-Burhans speech by a few moments.

In his speech, al-Burhan stated that rebel groups had committed war crimes against the people throughout Sudan. He called for considering these forces and their allied groups as terrorist organizations, adding that they are working by all means to stop this war and are responding to all initiatives presented by all parties.

He warned that regional and international interventions to assist these groups have become clear and are a spark that will set the region on fire. He returned in his speech to talk about a transitional phase in which the state is governed by an independent government. He emphasized that they are still extending their hands for peace, stopping the war, and alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese. However, the legitimate state institutions, including the government and the armed forces, will not allow the violation of the states sovereignty and legitimacy.

On the other hand, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo said in his prerecorded speech that achieving lasting peace in Sudan comes through ending the violence initiated by the armed forces. He added that we must work together in Sudan to build a new army and a military institution that serves the people, accusing the army of collaborating with ISIS and other terrorist groups.

According to analysts, al-Burhan and Hamidtis race to seek legitimacy by addressing the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly will not grant them legitimacy, even if they roam the corridors and halls of the United Nations, disavowing their coup against the transitional period of the December 2018 revolution and igniting catastrophic warfronts in Darfur, Khartoum, Kordofan, Marawi, and central Sudan. Analyst and political writer Wael Mahjoub believes that their practice of public deception and political evasion, and their false claims of their commitment to democracy, will not deceive the Sudanese people, the revolutionaries against the failed military regimes (Aboud 1958, Nimeiri 1969, Bashir 1989), which have spread destruction and economic, political, and social havoc, according to his article. He called on the two generals to stop the war and turn to the Jeddah platform to continue a new political process that restores democratic transition through a civilian government and to move away from the long-distance race through wars and coups.

On the other hand, political analyst Tajani Mohamed Saleh is concerned about the Libyan scenario and the establishment of two governments in eastern Sudan and another in western Sudan. He points out that both generals fear consolidating their control over a government based in Khartoum, fearing rejection and the continuation of the Sudanese revolution against them. This confirms that the generals will continue in a long race that may not end in victory, far from the center of the Sudanese revolution.
