(TAM) Demands the suspension of accountability of insolvent farmers

Demanding Organizations Alliance (TAM) demanded that accountability for insolvent farmers who are unable to pay the Sudanese Agricultural Banks loans be discontinued and that they be exempt from repayments of their debts or reduced on a convenient basis.

In a statement yesterday, TAM reiterated his position in support of the justice of farmers issues, notably the Sudanese Agricultural Banks attempt to compel farmers to participate coercively in the payment of the war bill, by holding insolvent farmers accountable and prosecuting, demanding that they repay prior loans and prosecute them through official agencies.

It stressed that equity and justice should be sought, smallholder farmers should not be targeted, and that treatment should not be differentiated from other holders of loans or financing from large farmers and large agricultural enterprises.

It warned of the repercussions of steps to pursue and restrict farmers and their impact on agriculture as an economic activity, exacerbating famines and creating a food security gap. He stressed the importance of dealing responsibly with the reality of public financial insolvency.

The statement alerted government agencies to the need to take into account the countrys special circumstances, to halt the movement of the economy and to the scale of the social and economic burdens placed on farmers and other groups in all states.
