Today, the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva approved a decision to establish an independent mission to investigate the facts and investigate the violations committed during the ongoing war in Sudan.

19 countries voted in favor of the resolution, which was submitted by the United Kingdom, the United States, and Norway, against 16 votes against the resolution, while 12 countries abstained from voting on the resolution.

Journalist and writer Wael Mahjoub considered the vote in favor of the draft resolution to form the committee a major victory for the civilian victims of the war. He added in a post on his Facebook page that the ongoing war has witnessed unprecedented patterns of crimes against humanity and catastrophic and serious violations of the law and the principles of human rights contained in the UN Charter.

Before the decision was issued, human rights organizations emphasized the need for member states of the council to adopt a draft resolution to establish a fact-finding mission and investigate war crimes and violations in Sudan.

Human Rights Watch said that members of the Human Rights Council have an opportunity and responsibility to use their votes to send a deterrent message to the warring parties in Sudan, and more importantly, to show solidarity with the people of Sudan and give hope to survivors, victims, and their families.
