UNHCR spokesperson in Geneva, Switzerland, Eujin Byun told reporters today that the increase in deaths and human rights violations against innocent citizens, including the increase in internal refugees, is getting worse in this period of six months since the beginning of the conflict in Sudan.

According to a new summary of UNHCRs protection released recently, approximately 4,000 civilians have been killed and 8,400 injured in Darfur state, only between April 15 and the end of August, while most of them were targeted for ethnic reasons, especially in West Darfur state.

Children who have fled their homes have been caught up in fighting, killed or maimed while their schools have been hit by shelling and those who have reached safe havens face psychological challenges.

At least 29 towns and villages have been destroyed across Darfur after looting, arson and indiscriminate shelling of camps and assembly areas for displaced people have killed hundreds of people.

Bujin said, Citizens who try to flee Darfur to seek safety are reported to be prevented from doing so or face challenges at the barriers, are arrested and put in prison.
