The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in the Sudan, Clementine Nkwita Salami, expressed deep concern at continued reports of attacks against civilian infrastructure as fighting continued in the Sudan.

In a statement distributed today by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Sudan (OCHA), Salami said: I am deeply concerned that the facilities necessary for the operation of basic services, including water, sanitation and health care, are under attack in the Sudan.

Over the past six months, I have repeatedly called on the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Forces and all parties to the conflict in the Sudan to protect civilian infrastructure, and international humanitarian law is clear in this regard.

Salami called on all parties to the armed conflict to ensure that civilian objects, including humanitarian personnel, humanitarian assets and basic infrastructure, were avoided.

The conflict has caused untold suffering in the Sudan on an unprecedented scale, and I once again appeal to the parties to end this terrible suffering by silencing weapons.

According to the statement, the United Nations documented attacks against vital infrastructure this October.

Shells hit Omdurmans Nu hospital on October 9, killing two people and injuring five others as medical personnel treated patients.

A shooting was also observed on October 21 at the Lighthouse Water Treatment Plant in Omdurman, provisionally halting water supplies.

5.8 million Sudanese have fled as a result of the war to other areas of the Sudan and neighbouring countries, of whom some 63,400 have been newly displaced over the past week, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
