The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) announced the launch of the Sudan Accountability Platform in partnership with other entities, including the International Criminal Court and the Sudan Human Rights Network, in November 2023.
The mission said in a statement today that the platform is dedicated to coordinating crucial evidence for holding accountable those responsible for crimes committed in Darfur, Khartoum, Omdurman, Port Sudan, and other areas.
The statement added that the upcoming weeks will witness the training of 40 representatives of Sudanese civil society and human rights defenders involved in documenting crimes committed in the ongoing conflict.
It also pointed out that human rights specialists in the mission will hold a workshop on "the interaction between journalism and accountability for human rights atrocities," in Entebbe (Uganda) next month, which could enable journalists to interact with our networks and partners.
UNITAMS said it invested before the conflict, through the Office for the Protection of Civilians (OSCP), efforts and resources to build civil society platforms in Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile regions, aiming to ensure the participation of civil society groups in human rights, protection, and transitional justice issues. The platforms were linked to UNITAMSs Human Rights Incident Monitoring and Analysis Tool (HIMAT), designed to enhance early warning, information gathering, and documentation of human rights violations and abuses.

The (HIMAT) tool is the first of its kind in the United Nations system, where civil society groups, human rights defenders, and local community groups can log in and share detailed information about human rights violations with the United Nations. Upon the outbreak of the conflict, this tool (HIMAT) became an exceptional means for human rights defenders on the ground and those who fled Sudan.
