Jeddah platform fails to reach ceasefire agreement in first round

Moatinoon
Sudans military and rapid support forces failed to reach a ceasefire agreement during the first round of talks held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The facilitators, Saudi Arabia, America, the African Union and IGAD, urged the parties to the conflict to first advance the interest of the Sudanese people, lay down arms and engage in negotiations to end the conflict.

In a joint statement today, the facilitators announced the commitment of the parties to the conflict to take steps to facilitate increased humanitarian assistance and the implementation of confidence-building measures.

The parties to the conflict committed to engaging in a joint humanitarian mechanism led by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations to address the obstacles to the delivery of relief assistance. It also committed to identifying focal points to facilitate the passage and transit of humanitarian workers.

The facilitators statement underscored the commitment of the parties to the conflict to implement confidence-building measures by establishing a communication mechanism between Sudanese Armed Forces commanders and the Rapid Support Forces, improving the media content of all parties and mitigating the media language argument.

Confidence-building measures include the detention of prison fugitives and action against escalating and conflict-fuelling parties.

The facilitators described this move as important to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance, which contributes to alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people, expressing regret at the lack of a ceasefire in this round.
