Pope appeals for humanitarian aid for people in war-torn Sudan

Moatinoon
Pope Francis, the Vaticans pope, appealed to leaders in the Sudan to facilitate humanitarian access for people suffering and to work for a peaceful solution to the civil war with the help of the international community.

Pope Francis drew attention to Sudans grave humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing civil war, which shows no signs of abating.

Speaking on Sunday, the Pope denounced the fighting that has caused many casualties, including millions of internally displaced persons and refugees in neighbouring countries.

"I am close to the suffering of dear people in the Sudan and make a sincere appeal to local leaders to facilitate access to humanitarian aid and, with the international communitys contribution, to seek peaceful solutions. Let us not forget our brothers and sisters who are in distress ".

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that the civil war in the Sudan has driven nearly six million people from their homes since fighting began in April. Dominic Hyde, UNHCRs Director of External Relations, recently visited the country and warned against escalating human suffering, saying: "Beyond the eyes of the world and the headlines, the conflict in the Sudan continues to rage. Throughout the country, an unimaginable humanitarian crisis is unfolding, as the number of displaced persons is increasing due to ongoing fighting ".
