United Nations: Increase in Displacement, Refugees, and Hunger in Sudan

The United Nations announced on Sunday that waves of displacement and refugee flows, after 7 months of war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, are still ongoing and have reached a record number of more than 6 million people within 211 days.

This number exceeds the latest statistics released by the International Organization for Migration earlier this month by 400,000 people, stating that it surpasses any other displacement crisis globally.

The UN renewed its call to the international community to fill the significant gap in funding relief operations, noting that Sudan is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history.

It explained that Sudan is currently witnessing the largest child displacement crisis in the world, with 3 million children fleeing widespread violence.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in a new update stated that 4.9 million people have been internally displaced to 5,191 locations in all 18 states of Sudan, in addition to 1.2 million people seeking refuge in the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. In the past month alone, 85,000 Sudanese sought refuge in neighboring countries.

Most of the displaced have sought refuge in the states of South Darfur, followed by the states of River Nile, East Darfur, White Nile, Gezira, Northern, and North Darfur.

It indicated that displacement, refugee status, and collective unemployment resulting from the destruction of infrastructure, work stoppages, and production halts have led to an increase in the number of those suffering from severe hunger to 20.3 million people, including 6 million people on the brink of famine.

It affirmed that Sudan has become one of the four hotspots causing the most concern regarding food security.
