US Senators: We do not expect the SAF and RSF to meet their commitments

U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and U.S. Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, in a statement today demanded that U.S. President Joe Bidens administration change its strategy on Sudan.

The statement described the Biden administrations emergency diplomatic efforts on Sudan in Jeddah with Saudi Arabia as a failure. He pointed out that they were like previous ineffective efforts that had wrongly empowered warring parties that had consistently broken their promises. The two United States representatives said that the expectation that SAF or RSF would meet their recent commitments was futile.

"This diplomacy has not stopped the atrocities. As mediators in Jeddah secured humanitarian "commitments", the Rapid Support Forces launched new ethnically targeted attacks in Darfur and the Sudanese Armed Forces continued to obstruct the distribution of aid in areas under their control. As the United States claims success in Jeddah, more innocent Sudanese are decimated. "

"The war in the Sudan is terrifying, which proves that the United States needs to change its strategy on the Sudan." The two representatives called on the Biden administration to expand its efforts beyond Jeddah and engage with a wider range of regional and international partners, in particular to forge important partnerships with African leaders seeking to build a peaceful, civilian-led future in the Sudan.
