Troika condemns the escalation of violence in Darfur

Moatinoon
Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States (Troika) condemned the escalation of violence and human rights violations in the Sudan, in particular attacks by the Rapid Support Forces in Western, Central and Southern Darfur.

Troika said the attacks included mass killings, including ethnic targeting of non-Arab and other communities, killing of traditional leaders, unjust arrests and obstruction of humanitarian assistance, according to documented reports according to a statement issued today.

It was concerned at reports of violence in the Jabal Ullya area on the White Nile river south of Khartoum, where civilians were reportedly targeted.

The statement affirmed the absence of an acceptable military solution to the conflict and called for an end to the fighting. He urged the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces to refrain from actions that would further divide the Sudan on ethnic grounds or attract other forces to their conflict.

The troika stressed the parties need to alleviate the situation and engage in meaningful discussions leading to a ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access.
