The United Nations stated today, Tuesday, that 37% of Sudans population is on the brink of famine, urging the international community to take immediate and collective action to avert an imminent humanitarian disaster due to the ongoing war.

The world is urged to provide 75.4 million to meet escalating needs, enhance local food production, and improve access throughout the country.

Hongji Yang, representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Sudan, said, "Concerning challenges to food security require more funding to sustain our vital support."

Volunteer teams in the state of Khartoum are struggling to feed the besieged population through donations and charity work. They have established "emergency rooms" formed by resistance committees, comprising 127 communal kitchens in various neighborhoods of the seven-state locality. Reports have emerged about food shortages in parts of Khartoum, such as Fataheab and Shajara neighborhoods.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has sounded the alarm about the worsening food security crisis in Sudan, stating that 17.7 million Sudanese will face high levels of acute food insecurity between October 2023 and February 2024.

It clarified that the population most affected by food insecurity is located in states with high levels of organized violence, including Greater Darfur, Greater Kordofan, and Khartoum - especially in the region of the three cities Khartoum, Bahri, and Omdurman.

The ongoing conflict, which has caused severe damage and destruction to vital infrastructure, widespread looting, escalating violence, increased shortages in basic services, food and non-food items, decreased agricultural production, rising food prices, climate shocks, and displacement have exacerbated the food insecurity and malnutrition crisis, compounding the humanitarian situation.
