Norwegian Council: Wad Madani is more than just a city

In the latest international and local reactions to the outbreak of fighting in Jazeera state, the Norwegian Refugee Council expressed "deep concern about the escalating conflict on the doorstep of densely populated Wad Madani" two days ago, Friday. It called on the warring parties to "commit to international humanitarian law and allow safe passage for individuals fleeing conflict, and ensure the urgent delivery of life-saving aid."

The Norwegian Refugee Council in Sudan stated in a statement on Sunday, "This is more than just another city under attack; it is one of the few remaining sanctuaries in Sudan that could come under fire."

On Friday, the battles reached the outskirts of Wad Madani, located 180 km south of Khartoum, and largely remained shielded from the fighting that erupted on April 15 between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

William Carter, the Country Director for the Norwegian Refugee Council in Sudan, said, "The continuous flow of people, many of whom fled to save their lives just a few months ago, are now rushing towards cities burdened and resource-exhausted in neighboring states."

He added, "We are extremely concerned about the extremely vulnerable families in Wad Madani, crowded in displacement shelters in schools for several months, with no place to hide from violence, no means of escape, and no other place to flee."
