More than 250 to 300 people fled Al Jazeera State following clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) around Wade Madani, the capital of Al Jazeera State, Sudans second largest city according to IOM. In the absence of transport options, many people reportedly fled on foot.

Clashes broke out on the morning of December 15 between SAF and RSF on the outskirts of Wad Madani, 136 kilometres south-east of the capital Khartoum. Air raids were reported for several days after December 15 in the western, northern and eastern parts of Wad Madani and the perimeter of the village of Al-Sharfah Barakat, north of the city. Shots have been heard daily since 15 December in various areas inside and outside of a civilian valley. On 18 December, the RSF reportedly entered the city of Wade Madani and by 19 December took control of the city.

People displaced by the conflict have taken refuge in many neighbouring States, many of whom cross into southern Sudan through the Rank border crossing. Due to the scarcity of transport options available, it has been reported that many people have fled on foot and are currently living in open areas, improvised shelters, schools and within the host community.

Displaced persons fled from a civilian friendly to Qadarif, Sennar and White Nile states. Many internally displaced persons reportedly arrived at the current internally displaced persons assembly sites (collective centres) in and around the Qadarif and Sinar localities. The majority have resorted to shelter within host communities, and local authorities and partners in Gedaref estimate that more than 10,000 people have taken refuge in host communities in the city of Gedaref.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that thousands of displaced persons from a civilian friendly have arrived in Sennar State on their way to Gedaref, Kassala and Blue Nile. The number of displaced persons will be available once the figures have been recorded and verified.

According to the organizations database, more than 1.5 million people have fled to neighbouring countries, a huge number in a country suffering from conflict, food insecurity and economic collapse. More than 5.5 million people have been internally displaced in the Sudan, and these recent moves following the conflict in civilian affliction will push the total number of displaced persons in the Sudan to more than 7.1 million, the worlds largest displacement crisis.
