The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced the arrival of a shipment of medicines to Sudan on Saturday.

In a tweet on the platform, he said, "The Global Logistics Hub sent 34 metric tons of emergency health supplies and equipment to diagnose and treat cholera, malaria, and other life-threatening diseases to protect the health of vulnerable populations in Sudan."

This comes after the international organization announced the temporary suspension of a major center of its operations in Wad Medani since the recent escalation in the Jazeera state. The organization stated that it is currently "exploring alternative mechanisms to ensure the delivery of our supplies to the few hospitals still operating in Jazeera, through non-governmental organizations still working there."

However, the World Health Organization pointed out that it is working with its international and governmental counterparts to "urgently distribute the required medicines and medical supplies, addressing the spread of epidemics, but the lack of security poses a significant challenge."

It also clarified that it "needs safe and unrestricted access so that health workers, including teams from the World Health Organization, can respond to the cholera outbreak and other diseases in the country, such as dengue fever, malaria, and measles."

The Free America website reported two days ago that the organization stated, "The health system in Sudan was already weak and suffering due to conflicts, the spread of diseases, and famine caused by drought, and now it is collapsing amid immense pressure caused by the ongoing war."

Moreover, the sector "is in a precarious situation amidst mass displacement, floods, the spread of diseases, in addition to the shortage of medical supplies, equipment, staff, and the necessary funds to cover the costs of the health sector."

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called on Friday for urgent measures to address the worsening health and humanitarian crises in Sudan, urging the international community to increase financial assistance.

On Friday, the World Food Programme, a United Nations agency, and Médecins Sans Frontières decided to suspend their operations in the Jazeera state due to the ongoing fighting.

More than 1,850 cholera cases and 26 deaths related to the disease have been recorded in Jazeera until December 15. Overall, there are over 8,530 cholera cases and 231 deaths related to cholera in 9 Sudanese states, according to the United Nations organization.
