Opening of 5 New Centers for Sudanese Children in Central Africa

The United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has inaugurated five centers for Sudanese children refugees in the Birao region of the Central African Republic.

UNICEF announced in a statement on Saturday on the XM platform that the centers, established to accommodate hundreds of children fleeing the war in Sudan, provide a safe haven where children can gather daily, play, and recover from the violence and traumatic experiences they have endured.

Birao is an isolated city in the Vakaga province in northern Central African Republic, bordering Sudan and Chad.

People in Birao speak Arabic, as well as French and local languages in Central Africa. The region has historically relied on Sudan for livelihoods. Reuters reports, "Residents prefer to go to the Sudanese city of Nyala, located 300 kilometers away, instead of taking the dangerous and long road to the capital, Bangui, which is a thousand kilometers away."
