German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for exerting pressure on the warring parties in Sudan to prevent them from continuing to drag the Sudanese people into the abyss and destabilizing the region, according to a statement on the German Foreign Ministrys website on Wednesday.

The statement came at the beginning of her tour in East Africa, starting today, which includes South Sudan, Kenya, and Djibouti to discuss the situation in Sudan and ways to protect shipping vessels in the Red Sea from attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Minister Baerbock stated, "I want to explore ways to bring Generals Burhan and Hemeti to the negotiating table so that they do not continue to drag the Sudanese people into the abyss and destabilize the region. For me, it is clear that we must increase pressure on both sides - through sanctions, by holding them accountable for their crimes against civilians, and by engaging with their supporters from abroad," according to the statement.

She added in the statement, "For me, it is clear that we must increase pressure on both sides through sanctions and hold them accountable for their violations against civilians and influence their supporters abroad."

Baerbock emphasized that Sudan "will only find lasting peace with a civilian democratic government," stating that she will meet with civil society members and pledging not to allow the war to make the situation in Sudan a "forgotten crisis."

She mentioned, "Despite the current bleak situation, brave young people - women at the forefront and in the middle - who took to the streets in 2019 for peaceful change and greater participation in society are advocating for a better future for the country. We owe it to them not to let this conflict become a forgotten crisis."
