The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced yesterday, Wednesday, that local authorities in the Central African Republic have approved the expansion of the "Korsy" refugee camp for Sudanese refugees in the city of Bira in the north of the country, covering an area of 50 hectares or half a million square meters.

This expansion allows the Korsy camp to accommodate a maximum of 10,000 refugees.

In its report for the period from January 18 to 24, the UN agency explained that the flow rate of Sudanese refugees is 176 refugees per day, and it is expected that the camp will reach its maximum capacity even after the expansion by February. The number will increase to 15,000 by March and then to 30,000 by June.

The camp currently hosts 6,379 Sudanese refugees or 3,132 families, the majority of whom are women and children. Other refugees are in small villages in various provinces, except for the Vakaga province. The National Refugee Council in the Central African Republic and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees have registered 12,124 Sudanese individuals, forming 4,098 families so far.
