In a statement on Monday, the U.S. Department of State included Ahmed Mohamed Haroun, the former Sudanese Minister of Interior in Omar al-Bashirs government, in the War Crimes Rewards Program, which offers rewards of up to five million dollars.

The statement clarified that Ahmed Mohamed Haroun is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur from 2003 to 2004. During this period, Haroun was accused of recruiting, mobilizing, financing, and arming the notorious Janjaweed militia, a precursor to the Rapid Support Forces, and participating in atrocities, including murder, rape, torture, forced displacement of populations, persecution, and other inhumane acts.

"It is of utmost importance to locate Haroun and have him face the International Criminal Court to answer the charges against him," the statement added.

The Department urged those with information about Harouns whereabouts to contact the War Crimes Rewards Program.

The Department emphasized that achieving lasting peace in Sudan requires justice for the victims and accountability for those responsible for human rights violations in the past and present.
