The Commissioner for Crisis Management of the European Union, Janez Lenarčič, announced from the Chadian capital, NDjamena, on Wednesday that the Union has allocated €117 million in new humanitarian aid for Chad and Sudan.

A statement issued by the European Union Commission explained that €45 million will go to meet the most urgent humanitarian needs in Chad, particularly for refugees, returnees, and host communities affected by the Sudanese conflict in the eastern part of the country. It will also aid internally displaced persons affected by the conflict in the Lake Chad Basin in western Chad and vulnerable populations facing the threat of famine and malnutrition.

This new EU humanitarian funding will address pressing protection and humanitarian assistance needs, including emergency food provision, medical care, nutrition, water, sanitation, hygiene, shelter, and childrens education during crises.

Lenarčič met with President Idriss Déby and Prime Minister Sakhisjo Masra, as well as ministers and representatives of international humanitarian organizations, EU member states, the World Bank, and UN agencies in Chad. He also visited refugee camps in the eastern Chadian city of Adré.

The statement added that the European Union has also allocated an initial amount of €72 million for Sudan in 2024 to help the country cope with the impact of the conflict and the resulting massive humanitarian needs for approximately 24.8 million people, nearly half of Sudans population.

The Commissioner stated, "The humanitarian needs in Chad and Sudan are staggering. For Chad, the Sudanese crisis has led to a significant influx of refugees, welcomed by the authorities and local populations with notable solidarity. However, this crisis threatens further destabilization in a country already facing long-term crises and multiple challenges. The European Union has decided to mobilize new financial resources to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation, including through cross-border operations in Darfur. With this new funding, the European Union reaffirms its support for Chad and stands by the most vulnerable groups to help them meet their basic needs. As for Sudan, our goal is to provide vital assistance to those displaced by conflict or otherwise affected, as well as those affected by other disasters, climate shocks, or epidemics."

Chads Prime Minister called on the European Commissioner to increase international solidarity for the afflicted population in eastern Chad, stating, "The challenges are enormous, and it is important that international solidarity moves to provide assistance to these afflicted people," according to local Chadian reports.
