Sudanese Flee to Central Africa Seeking Refuge

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees stated that Sudanese refugees continue to flow into the Central African Republic due to the ongoing war in Sudan.

The mid-February periodic update explained that the Am Dafouq border crossing between Sudan and the Central African Republic receives 113 newcomers daily to the "Koussi" camp in the Bira region of Central Africa. The report stated that the failure of the harvest season, food shortages affecting most of the population, insecurity, and the lack of healthcare services, especially in Nyala, forced Sudanese to flee to the Central African Republic.

The International Organization reported that the number of Sudanese refugees in Central Africa since the beginning of the war in Sudan in April of the previous year increased by 82% compared to 2022. The number arriving at the "Koussi" camp since January 1st reached 4,626 refugees (2,189 families), bringing the total number in the camp to 7,492 refugees (3,673 families). The overall number of refugees and asylum seekers in the Central African Republic since the crisis began is 65,798.

The UN organization expects the number of Sudanese refugees in the Koussi camp to reach 10,000 by the beginning of March and 15,000 by mid-April.

To support Sudanese refugees, predominantly women and children, the womens group in the Koussi camp has started harvesting and selling tomatoes with support from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The organization stated that profits from the sales would be reinvested by the group to expand its agricultural activities. This project is part of the psychological and social support and resilience-building project called "Ma Mbi Si Listening Center."
