The official spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General announced in an official statement that the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) has completed its withdrawal from Sudan on February 29, 2024.

The statement added that a limited team of UN staff will remain in Port Sudan to oversee the missions liquidation process, starting from March 1. The Secretary-General relies on full cooperation from the Sudanese authorities to ensure the smooth and expeditious completion of this process.

The statement warned that the ongoing conflict exacerbates the erosion of the rule of law and the protection of civilians, jeopardizing the entire country and region. It reiterated the Secretary-Generals call for all conflict parties to lay down their weapons and commit to broad-ranging peace talks leading to the resumption of a civilian-led democratic transition.

The spokesperson, on behalf of the Secretary-General, affirmed that the United Nations will not abandon Sudan and remains committed to providing life-saving humanitarian assistance and supporting the Sudanese people in their aspirations for peace and a secure future.

The statement pointed out that Ramtan Al-Aamamra, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Sudan, has commenced his work to support mediation efforts in coordination and close partnership with African partners and other international counterparts. The mediation efforts will complement the ongoing essential work conducted by the United Nations team on the ground.

The statement conveyed the Secretary-Generals call to the Sudanese authorities to continue their cooperation, including facilitating visa issuance and ensuring unimpeded movement for UN and its partners personnel in the country to deliver the urgently needed humanitarian support.

It is worth noting that the UN Security Council terminated the mandate of the United Nations Political Mission in December last year, based on Sudans request.
