The Security Council discusses a ceasefire in Sudan before Ramadan

Diplomats say that the United Nations Security Council is considering a call for an immediate ceasefire before the start of Ramadan in the nearly year-long ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the quasi-military Rapid Support Forces.

The 15-member council is negotiating a draft resolution put forward by Britain, and diplomats say it may be put to a vote on Friday. Ramadan begins next week.

According to Reuters, the resolution calls on "all parties to ensure the removal of any obstacles, facilitate full, rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access, including across borders and through various points, and comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law."

The United Nations says that nearly 25 million people, half of Sudans population, are in need of assistance. Around eight million people have been displaced from their homes, and hunger levels continue to rise.

Since the outbreak of the war on April 15, 2023, the council has issued only three press statements condemning the violence and expressing concern.

The same position was reiterated in a resolution issued in December to terminate a political mission affiliated with the United Nations, following a request from the acting Sudanese foreign minister.

The Security Council resolution urges all countries to "refrain from external interference seeking to foment conflict and instability" and calls on them to "support efforts for a lasting peace."

A Security Council resolution requires the approval of at least nine members and no use of the veto by the United States, Russia, Britain, China, or France.
