The UN Security Council today called on the warring parties in Sudan to cease hostilities during the month of Ramadan.

The resolution, adopted by the Council with the support of 14 members and Russia abstaining from voting, calls for an immediate halt to combat operations in Sudan during the month of Ramadan and urges all conflicting parties to seek a sustainable solution through dialogue.

The resolution, presented by the United Kingdom, urges "all parties to ensure the removal of any obstacles and enable the full, rapid, safe, and unimpeded access of humanitarian aid, including across borders and through conflict lines, and compliance with their commitments under international humanitarian law."

The Councils statement mentioned that these commitments include "the protection of civilians and civilian objects, and the pledges under the Declaration of Commitment to Protect Civilians in Sudan, known as the Jeddah Declaration."

The resolution encourages the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General to Sudan, Ramtan Lamamra, to use his good offices with the parties and neighboring countries to complete and coordinate regional peace efforts.
