The number of Sudanese refugees in Egypt has risen to half a million since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April last year.

The UN Refugee Agency stated that the number of individuals who crossed the border from Sudan to Egypt since April 2023 until the present March reached 508,827 people, including 500,000 Sudanese and 8,827 individuals of other nationalities, according to the latest figures received by the agency from the Egyptian government.

The Egyptian government had announced at the end of last month that the total number of Sudanese who entered Egypt due to the war reached 450,000.

The international organization noted that it has registered so far 207,889 individuals fleeing from Sudan out of 433,140 individuals provided with pre-registration appointments since the beginning of the conflict in April 2023.

It indicated that one of the main concerns for Sudanese refugees arriving in Egypt is housing.

The organization also revealed that the majority of newly registered residents coming from Sudan are Sudanese citizens at 93%, followed by South Sudanese citizens at 3%, and Eritreans at 3% as well. The female ratio remains the majority at 53%. The vast majority of newly registered arrivals are from Khartoum, constituting 89%, including 21% of those registered having one or more specific needs, including a lack of legal documentation. Concerns persist due to the ongoing rise in cases of irregular crossings into Egypt.

Regarding resettlement in other countries, the agency in Egypt stated that it has provided "solutions in third countries for 312 individuals, identified as having crossed from Sudan to Egypt with resettlement opportunities or under complementary pathways programs since the start of the emergency."
