The Norwegian Refugee Council: World Leaders Must Provide Funding and Protect Civilians

An international non-governmental organization criticized the warring parties for obstructing aid flows, allowing the looming catastrophe of an imminent famine, and condemned the international community for its indifference.

Will Carter, the Country Director for the Norwegian Refugee Council in Sudan, stated in a press release today about a year of war, After a year since the start of the war in Sudan, civilians here are suffering from famine, widespread sexual violence, ethnic killings, and executions. Millions have been displaced, yet the world continues to look the other way.

He added, Today marks a turning point for the warring parties in Sudan, as well as for the international community, which has allowed this catastrophe to worsen. The impending famine should have compelled the warring parties to allow aid to flow, but the reality on the ground is that aid remains obstructed, and global powers remain indifferent.

He warned that the situation could become the worlds largest hunger crisis and called on world leaders to intervene and provide essential funding to save millions from imminent famine and ongoing shelling.

He emphasized, We need all possible diplomatic influence on the warring parties to avoid further disasters and protect civilians."
