Canada imposes sanctions on six Sudanese entities

Hours after Britain announced new sanctions on Sudanese commercial entities, Canada on Monday imposed sanctions on six individuals and entities associated with the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in response to the ongoing armed conflict in Sudan.

The sanctions included Abdel Rahim Hamdan Dagalo, Ali Ahmed Karti, Al Junaid for Multidimensional Activities Limited Company, GSK Advanced Limited, the Defense Industries System, and Zadna International Investment Limited.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said, "Reports of serious human rights violations and abuses of international humanitarian law committed in the ongoing conflict in Sudan are deeply concerning. Todays actions are in line with Canadian principles and values. Canada condemns the reprehensible acts of violence that prolong the crisis in Sudan and calls on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, allow unhindered humanitarian access, and engage constructively in mediation efforts."

Last week, the New Democratic Party and former Canadian ambassador to Sudan, Nicholas Coghlan, urged the Canadian government to follow the lead of its American and European counterparts in imposing sanctions on economic networks relied upon by warring parties in Sudan.
