Mercy Corps Calls for Cash Instead of In-Kind Aid

An international non-governmental organization has urged a reconsideration of the approach to assisting displaced individuals in Sudan by providing cash instead of in-kind aid that often fails to reach those in need due to insecurity and bureaucratic hurdles.

The Sudan country director of Mercy Corps, Sibongile Khumalo, stated in a statement yesterday that when in-kind aid cannot reach the population, providing cash assistance represents a glimmer of hope for millions.

Khumalo noted that citizens in Sudan are facing a real famine and warned that nearly 230,000 children, pregnant women, and new mothers could die in the coming months due to hunger.

She added that international donor entities must swiftly disburse the necessary funds to expand humanitarian response in Sudan, which still faces a 2 billion shortfall despite commitments made at a recent conference in Paris.

Khumalo highlighted that 94% of internally displaced persons can find food in markets but cannot afford the costs. She stated, "A greater proportion of funds must be disbursed through cash programs, including supporting local organizations, markets, and farmers who represent in Sudan the most important source of sustenance and recovery."

She emphasized that support for emergency cash is more critical than ever, as it has become another essential lifeline for those in need, noting that they have worked with other organizations through local partners to reach vulnerable communities with cash, enabling them to purchase essential items from nearby stores, empowering them to determine what they and their families need to survive while supporting local markets to stay afloat.
