United Nations: Aid to Darfur Stalled on Roads

An official responsible for humanitarian aid in Sudan has stated that trucks carrying humanitarian aid to Darfur are stuck at stations between Port Sudan and El Geneina.

Deputy UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Toby Harward, tweeted today, Saturday, on the XIN platform that aggressive rhetoric, military activities, and administrative obstacles have prevented trucks from continuing their journey.

Harward called on conflict parties to provide a safe and unrestricted environment for humanitarian operations wherever needed, regardless of who controls the area.

He added, "During discussions inside and around El Fasher in recent days, all parties acknowledged the urgent need to systematically ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Darfur city and areas. As a result, some trucks managed to reach displaced persons camps and sites in North Darfur."

The United Nations World Food Programme announced on April 5th that two aid convoys crossed the border from Chad to Darfur in late March to assist around 250,000 people facing severe hunger in North, West, and Central Darfur.

The UN agency clarified at the time that the entry of the two convoys required lengthy negotiations, and it is not clear whether the next convoy will be able to pass through this route.
