FAO: Funding and Access Key to Preventing Famine in Sudan

Ren Paulsen, Director of Emergency and Resilience at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), warned that famine looms over Sudan, with the grain planting season just weeks away, and many farmers facing difficulty accessing their lands while organizations supporting them suffer from severe funding shortages.

Speaking in a video interview with "UN News" from Port Sudan on Friday, he stated that conflict is "the primary driver of the food crisis," but noted that conditions are challenging even in areas that have some security and are on the frontlines of climate change.

He explained, "The main grain planting season is coming up in a few weeks. Farmers need to be preparing their land now in April and May, and planting seeds in June. For us, this timing is crucial, especially to boost the crop season. But we are here because the threat of famine is real. The food security situation is deeply concerning. But we have an opportunity to respond, and thats what we are busy with at the moment."

There are two main challenges facing the Food and Agriculture Organization: funding and access to those in need, and these issues must be addressed to prevent famine.
