The High-Level Joint Committee of the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has warned of the repercussions of the ongoing war in Sudan, which increases the risk of Sudans fragmentation and erosion of its unity and sovereignty. The two parties affirmed in a joint statement issued today that there is no military solution to the crisis.

The two African organizations expressed their concern about the tragic developments in the military and humanitarian situation, considering the escalating confrontations between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in areas such as Fashir and Kordofan to pose a real threat to the security of civilian populations, as in other areas in Sudan.

The statement indicated that the attacks launched by the Rapid Support Forces on the city of Fashir entail the risk of a large number of civilian casualties and violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law.

The statement stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire, followed by cessation of hostilities, humanitarian commitment, urgent protection of civilians, regional and international commitment, and resumption of a comprehensive and acceptable political process for all Sudanese people.

The statement revealed ongoing efforts by the High-Level Joint Committee of the African Union and IGAD to contribute to resolving this crisis and achieving the aspirations of the Sudanese people for security and peace.

The statement also mentioned meetings held by the African Unions high-level team concerned with Sudan with presidents and foreign ministers of many regional countries as part of diplomatic activities, in addition to consultations with the Secretary-General of the Arab League.

The team held meetings with General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhans team and representatives of the Rapid Support Forces commander, as well as meetings with Sudanese civilian stakeholders to mobilize them for comprehensive Sudanese political dialogue.
