US Monitor: Fighting Destroys 253 Buildings in Babnousa

A US-backed Sudan Conflict Observatory reported that the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the city of Babnousa has resulted in at least 253 buildings being destroyed across the city between January 22 and May 6, 2024.

In a report published on Thursday, the observatory explained that on January 22, the RSF attacked the headquarters of the 22nd Infantry Division controlled by the SAF. The SAF managed to repel the attack, but the fighting continued. In the following months, neither side achieved a decisive victory, but the fighting had significant humanitarian consequences.

The report added that the severe damage to civilian infrastructure throughout Babnousa raises doubts about the commitments of both the SAF and RSF to protect civilians and adhere to international humanitarian laws governing armed conflict.
