Continuous Influx of Sudanese into Uganda

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported a significant influx of Sudanese arrivals into Uganda, with an average of 233 individuals per day. This has resulted in overcrowding at the Kiryandongo Reception Center, the largest refugee camp in the country.

In its latest report on Wednesday, the UNHCR stated that the Kiryandongo Reception Center currently hosts 965 individuals from various nationalities, despite its maximum capacity of 560 individuals. This overcrowding is attributed to the large influx of new Sudanese arrivals, averaging 233 people per day, compounded by communication issues at the reception center.

The report highlighted that out of the total 965 individuals, 860 people, or 89%, are Sudanese nationals.

The reception center serves as the initial stage for registering and categorizing refugees before they are distributed to refugee camps.

Since the onset of the conflict in April 2023, Uganda has received 35,429 refugees from Sudan. Since January of this year, 22,606 Sudanese individuals have sought asylum in Uganda.

Sudanese refugees are primarily distributed between the Nyumanzi and Kiryandongo camps, while many prefer to move to the capital city, Kampala.
