US Provides Additional Aid for Sudanese Children

The United States has announced an additional 38 million in humanitarian aid for Sudan, most of which will be allocated to the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) to support the children of Sudan.

This was announced by Tyler Beckelman, the Deputy Assistant Administrator for Africa at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), during an event titled "Unite for Sudans Children" in Nairobi, Kenya. The event was organized by USAID, UNICEF, and Save the Children to highlight the challenges faced by Sudanese youth amid 14 months of war.

In a statement released the day before yesterday, USAID clarified that 23 million of the total amount will go to UNICEF. This funding will enable UNICEF and its international NGO partners to continue critical relief efforts to support Sudanese children.

With this announcement, the total humanitarian aid provided by the US government to Sudan since October 2022 has surpassed 1.4 billion, according to the USAID statement.

However, the agency stressed that while funding is crucial to keep people alive in Sudan, it alone is not sufficient. The warring parties must immediately and permanently cease hostilities, stop interfering with humanitarian operations, and ensure safe and unhindered access for humanitarian workers and supplies to reach those in need across borders and conflict lines.

The ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has left an estimated 14 million children—more than half of Sudans 24 million children—in need of humanitarian assistance. This includes nearly four million children projected to require urgent humanitarian aid to combat acute malnutrition in 2024.
