UN expert on human rights in Sudan, Adama Dieng, arrived in Port Sudan on Sunday for an official visit, his first since the outbreak of war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in April last year. The purpose of his visit is to assess the human rights situation in the country amidst the ongoing conflict.

According to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA), Dieng was welcomed by officials from the Human Rights Departments of the Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs.

During his five-day visit from Sunday, July 7 to July 11, Dieng will hold meetings in Port Sudan with Sudanese authorities, UN agencies, and other humanitarian partners, as well as representatives of civil society organizations. He will also seek to engage directly with displaced communities to hear their concerns, according to a statement from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The statement explained that the findings of this visit will contribute to the preparation of the next annual report by the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the human rights situation in Sudan, which will be presented to the Human Rights Council at its 58th session in March 2025.

Adama Dieng was appointed by the Human Rights Council to document violations and crimes committed following the Sudanese armys takeover of power in a military coup in October 2021.
